Illustration 1: The Thirty-Day Tree

1The Thirty-Day Tree

1. Seven seconds after leaving Earth, the Ninja explorers stood beneath unfamiliar stars. 2. Across the moon's silver valley, a glowing biodome (BY-oh-dohm)—an enclosed space for growing living things—rose like a glass mountain. 3. Inside, one golden-fruited tree stretched higher than every other plant. 4. Maya checked her wrist screen, which displayed a surprising measurement (MEH-zhur-ment)—a number describing something observed: TREE AGE: 30 DAYS.

5. "A tree that big in one month?" Kai asked. 6. Maya zoomed in and spotted five glowing rings around its trunk. 7. The rings lit up one after another, almost as though the garden were inviting them inside. 8. "I think," Maya said, "we've found our next mystery."

Illustration 2: Five Glowing Clues

2Five Glowing Clues

9. The doors opened onto towers of strawberries, bright flowers, and streams beneath clear walkways. 10. A cheerful robot rolled forward and introduced itself as Luma, the garden's guide. 11. Above its head appeared a hologram (HOL-oh-gram)—an image that seems three-dimensional—showing the giant tree surrounded by five symbols. 12. "Each symbol hides a clue," Luma explained, "and together they reveal the garden's secret."

13. Kai noticed a glowing indicator (IN-di-kay-tur)—a sign that shows information—pointing toward some lettuce. 14. "We have to solve this ourselves?" he asked. 15. "You get to," Luma answered, its eyes flashing blue. 16. Maya followed the light, determined to discover whether the thirty-day tree was real.

Illustration 3: Roots Without Dirt

3Roots Without Dirt

17. Beneath the lettuce, white roots dangled in clear water instead of soil. 18. "Somebody forgot the dirt," Kai whispered, but Maya was already examining the flowing channels. 19. Luma called the method hydroponics (HY-droh-PON-iks)—growing plants without soil using water that supplies what their roots need. 20. The water carried nutrients (NOO-tree-ents)—substances that help living things grow.

21. Maya traced a channel until it disappeared beneath the giant tree. 22. "So roots can get what they need without soil," she said. 23. The first ring turned green, displaying: ROOTS NEED THE RIGHT CONDITIONS. 24. Kai grinned, but Maya noticed that the tree's roots were hidden behind a wall. 25. "Interesting," she said, "but we still haven't seen what's underneath that tree."

Illustration 4: A Sky Built by Scientists

4A Sky Built by Scientists

26. The next light led them upstairs beneath rows of red, blue, and white lamps. 27. "It's like someone built a second sky," Kai said. 28. Luma explained photosynthesis (FOH-toh-SIN-thuh-sis)—the process plants use to make sugars from light, water, and carbon dioxide. 29. Different colors belonged to the visible spectrum (SPEK-trum)—the range of colors in light.

30. Maya watched the lamps above the giant tree brighten in a carefully timed pattern. 31. "You can give plants useful light even when sunlight is limited," she realized. 32. The second ring flashed green, but a narrow beam swept across the trunk and stopped at a glass panel. 33. On the panel appeared another message: LOOK CLOSER AT THE WATER.

Illustration 5: The Water's Return Trip

5The Water's Return Trip

34. Behind the panel, clear pipes twisted overhead like a transparent maze. 35. Kai watched water move through a repeating circulation (sur-kyuh-LAY-shun)—a path that carries something around and back again. 36. Some returning water passed through filtration (fil-TRAY-shun)—cleaning that removes unwanted material. 37. Elsewhere, cool surfaces collected moisture released by leaves.

38. "So the garden catches water and uses some again," Maya said. 39. "Yes, though we still replace what the system loses," Luma replied. 40. The third ring glowed green as a pipe beside the tree lit up from bottom to top. 41. At its highest point, the ninjas spotted a small silver robot waiting beside the branches.

Illustration 6: The Tiny Garden Detectives

6The Tiny Garden Detectives

42. The robot floated from leaf to leaf, recording information without touching the fruit. 43. Luma said its sensors (SEN-surz)—devices that detect or measure conditions—checked temperature, light, and moisture. 44. The garden also used automation (aw-tuh-MAY-shun)—machines carrying out tasks with limited direct human control. 45. Kai watched another robot adjust a lamp after receiving a measurement.

46. "It's like the whole garden is paying attention," he said. 47. Maya examined a screen and discovered that the giant tree had arrived exactly thirty days earlier. 48. Before she could mention it, the fourth ring flashed green and sparkling golden mist filled the room. 49. Luma rolled toward the tree and announced, "One clue remains."

Illustration 7: The Golden Rain

7The Golden Rain

50. Fine droplets shimmered above the branches, turning ordinary water into a curtain of gold. 51. "It's beautiful," Maya said, catching a drop on her glove. 52. Luma explained humidity (hyoo-MID-uh-tee)—the amount of water vapor in the air—and showed how the garden controlled it. 53. Careful conservation (kon-sur-VAY-shun)—using resources without needless waste—helped the system collect and reuse water.

54. Kai counted four green rings and one still silver. 55. "We know about roots, light, water, and robots," he said, "so what's missing?" 56. Maya looked from the mist to the pipes, then toward the hidden roots. 57. "Maybe the answer isn't another machine," she whispered.

Illustration 8: The Fifth Ring

8The Fifth Ring

58. Maya called up the hologram and placed the four discoveries together. 59. The pipes fed the roots, the lamps lit the leaves, and the sensors helped control both. 60. "They work together," she said, "instead of working alone." 61. Luma called this integration (in-tuh-GRAY-shun)—joining parts into one system—and optimization (op-tuh-muh-ZAY-shun)—adjusting things to get better results.

62. The fifth ring burst into green light, and the hologram displayed: MYSTERY SOLVED. 63. Kai cheered, but Maya held up her hand. 64. "Not quite," she said, pointing to the original message on her wrist. 65. "We've explained how the garden works, but have we proved this huge tree grew in thirty days?"

Illustration 9: The Number That Changed Everything

9The Number That Changed Everything

66. Luma opened the hidden panel, revealing a photograph of the tree arriving on a transport platform. 67. It was already tall, with thick branches and golden fruit beginning to form. 68. "Thirty days in this garden," Maya realized, "not thirty days since the seed sprouted!" 69. The tree had undergone transplantation (trans-plan-TAY-shun)—moving a plant to a new growing place—after years of cultivation (kul-tuh-VAY-shun)—growing and caring for plants.

70. Kai laughed. 71. "We solved five clues, but the biggest mystery was what the number meant!" 72. Luma changed the display to read: TIME IN BIODOME: 30 DAYS. 73. Maya smiled at the towering branches. 74. "Good scientists don't just collect facts," she said. 75. "They check what those facts actually tell them."

Illustration 10: The Garden of Tomorrow

10The Garden of Tomorrow

76. At sunset, Luma projected future cities with vegetable gardens climbing their buildings. 77. It described sustainability (suh-stay-nuh-BIL-uh-tee)—meeting needs while caring for future resources. 78. The ninjas saw how innovation (in-uh-VAY-shun)—finding new ideas or improving old ones—could help grow food in cities, deserts, and spacecraft.

79. "Our biggest discovery wasn't a magical tree," Kai said as the dome glowed behind them. 80. "It was learning how real science works," Maya replied. 81. She saved the corrected measurement beside a picture of the five glowing rings. 82. Then Luma showed them one final image: a small garden floating inside a spacecraft far from any planet. 83. "Now," Luma asked, "how would you grow food where there is almost no gravity?" 84. The ninjas exchanged excited looks, already imagining their next adventure.
